Anime Detour Fast Approaches

I am attending Amine Detour for the first time this year and I am planning a few costumes of the occasion. It is a bummer that is only two days because I have more that two costume ideas but I may have to save some for a future detour.

I am definitely planning to make a Sango costume, complete with giant boomerang. I only have the black catsuit so far so I need to get crackin'. I ordered a Kirara toy on eBay so that is on it's way, I plan to Velcro her to my shoulder. I am thinking either fabric or fun foam for the reddish-pink armor type pads she has on her costume. I also have shoes already. And I may end up wearing my black under bust corset, not sure. I have a plastic kids katana that I picked up around Halloween that I plan to paint to match hers. I have toyed with the idea of getting a back pony tailed, banged wig but I am trying to stick to a budget. I also want to make her mask, I hope I don't forget it.

I am leaning toward doing a Rin costume. I ordered a green wig on eBay. As long as it looks good I will probably go with that, especially since it would be a fairly simple costume and I already have the suit and glasses. Not sure if I will add some wounds or not...

Another idea is Nausicaa but I most likely won't have time. I do have her little fox squirrel friend though.

Silent Hill Nurse Costume

WARNING, this costume is really creepy and honestly, pretty disturbing. One of my friends calls it my "meat-face" costume. Strangely enough, I am not a violent person at all, I just love costuming, and gory make up and costumes are some of the most elaborate and interesting costumes I have come across.

For Convergence last year, I decided to make a Silent Hill Bubble Head Nurse costume. It turned out to be the best costume ever. Multiple adult people ran away from me and many came up to me later when I had my mask off to tell me how utterly horrifying my costume was. It was glorious. To add to the effect, I shuttered and walked around at a creepy, random gate and would often stop and slowly turn my head to look at anyone who already looked slightly creeped out. I also held an odd posture with my shoulders back, knees in and head tilted at an odd angle. My neck was killing me by the end of the night but it was worth it.

I did a bunch of internet research when I started my costume and really appreciated the people who had taken the time to explain how they made their costumes so I want to share the love and explain how I made mine. I did all of this last year so please forgive me for not adding links to the specific tutorials of videos I found online, but I am sure if you did a quick search, you would find the same ones. I bunch of my costume just came from experimenting because many of the tutorials did not give specifics. Also, keep in mind that I had a few months to work on this costume before the event so I had lots of time to shop around to find good deals on the costume pieces that worked best.

I made the entire mask from scratch but the rest of the costume was thrift store or internet-bought pieces that I altered and gored up. The costume consisted of the mask, a sexy nurse costume (bought online), shoes (thrift store), and white tights. I also went to a local surplus store called Axman and got a super creepy looking pair of 8 inch long hemostat to carry as my "weapon".

Shoes:

I hit at least 5 different thrift stores looking for the right shoes in my size. The shoes for the character are an off white color and heavily stained with gore. It is really hard to find white shoes, particularly in a specific size. It the end I lucked out and found some gold, Steve Madden shoe a half a size too big that were actually really comfortable. They were easy enough to paint a creamy off-white, I just sandpapered them a bit to make the surface hold the paint better. I pretty much use acrylic paint for everything because it dries fast, has many colors, is cheap and if you put it on clothes you can throw them in the laundry and it doesn't come off so your costumes stay intact (great for zombie costumes). After two coats of off-white, I went in the bathroom tub put them in a plastic wash tub and splattered them with a couple different mixtures of crimson (perfect for blood), black, brown, yellow ochre and watery combinations of these colors, to my liking. The gorier the better I say (many costumes pictures I saw online had little to no gore on them, if you look at video games' stills of nurses you will see there is no real limit to how much gore you should use and the costumes are absolutely no longer "white" anywhere). I focused a lot on the toes, considering that is where the gore would fall.

Dress:

I purchased the dress online (it came with a little crappy headband hat and stethoscope that I didn't use). It was intended to be a sexy nurse costume which was the perfect shape and cut for the costume. The only problem was I was torn between which size to get and I got the larger to be sure it would fit and so it was too big. No biggy cause my mom took it in the back for me but I wish I had gone with the smaller size. If the costume is supposed to be tight fitting, always go with the smaller size. I am 5'4" and 138 pounds and got a medium and it was pretty lose fitting. After my mom took it in, I tea and coffee dyed it over night. It still wasn't yellow-y enough for me so I also mixed up a yellow ochre and brown acrylic with water stain the thickness of milk to dip random parts of the dress in and ended up hanging it in the shower and took a brush and splattered the heck out of it. I also mixed some watery brown to splatter it too to make some darker patches. Then I let that dry over night before adding the red (because I didn't want pink). Be sure to leave it in the tub because it will drip. I did the same mixtures of crimson, black, brown, yellow ochre and watery combinations of these colors to splatter

the dress that I did for the shoes. I ended up dipping my hands in the straight crimson and brown and black paint to make hand prints and smear and rub the gore in more. The black made it look burned or rotten which really added to the creep factor. I also took some scissors and randomly cut up the hem and even burned it a bit with a lighter (I only burned it a bit, mostly to keep it from fraying. Be careful if you do this very much, considering the potential fumes and fire hazard). Be sure to look at it from all angle check if you missed any spots.

Mask and Hat:

I found a blog online that had steps to making a liquid latex, water and toilet paper mask and used that. The only thing I changed was the shapes of the face and eye, mouth and nose holes and the type of paint (they used an oil based paint, I didn't want to deal with the smell). Also, I used pale flesh colored latex instead of white which left me with a nice, gross-looking, fleshy "base" color before painting. Be careful, many tutorials called for fowl smelling materials to make masks and making something to wear on your face out of toxic materials is an all around bad idea. I had a half a larger bottle (less than a pint) of liquid latex lying around and the smell was pretty gross but not that bad, especially once I let it dry fully and air out for a couple weeks. I almost didn't have enough latex but I made it work. Here is the tutorial for making the mask:

I did 2 or 3 layers of the latex tp spit balls (or fat slug shapes, really) all over and left bigger holes for the eyes nose and mouth than the tutorial. I really wanted to wear the thing all day at the convention and I want to be sure I could see and breath really well. It took a long time to dry. I put a fan on it and left it on the form for a few days to be sure it would hold it's shape before I removed it gently and layed it upside-down on some paper towel and bags so it could continue to dry and not get dented. It took at least a week to dry fully and I left it for a couple more to air out. The mask is flexible when it is dry but you can't cut it or anything so be sure it will fit your face ok while making it. I lucked out and my head form wasn't too different then the size of my head. The chin is a bit tight, I attempted to trim it with scissors but there was no way it was going to cut.

I used the same mixtures of paint that I used for the rest, except, since it was textured I tried to put a dark black-ish, scabby color down in all the cracks and crevices and brushed lighter, brighter colors on top to create more depth. I also blobbed on some red to it looked like wet blood. Blood colored nail polish is great for this. I completed the mask with stretchy bandages that wrapped around the back of my head to hide my hair. I hot glued them on one side and added Velcro to the other side so it would be easy to wear. I also added a piece of gauze to block out the eye holes and mouth/nose holes so you can't see my eyes that well but I can see out and breath just fine. I stained them with acrylic paint and hot glued them on the inside of the mask.

The canvas hat I made thanks to an online video I found. I used for muslin canvas I had from painting and hot glued it into the shape. I then hot glued it to the top of the hat and it is big enough to pull down over the top of my head to cover the top of my hair. I gored that up too, of course, to match the rest. Here is the video, it was awesome. I had never "sewn" by hot gluing before and it changed my life.

I love that the hat is all one piece. It completely covers my head and hair and the Velcro makes it super easy to take on and off. (I will try to add a close up picture of the completed mask with hat later.)

Tights:

I did the tights at the last minute in the bathroom at con. I figured this was best because to get the best affect you have to do this while you are wearing them and once you put fake blood on them, they will kind of stick to your legs and won't really be reusable. I did wish I had more time to paint veins on them but the affect was still great. My arms, neck and legs were the only places I used fake blood, because it is a lot easier to remove from your skin than acrylic. I am pretty pale but I added a bit of white clown makeup to my arms to make them paler and the tights were great for that effect. I also wore some brown boy shorts under the dress over the tights.

Other touches:

I painted my nails black and wore a rubber glove on one hand for most of the day. I did some slightly contour-y, dead-looking makeup under the mask, I kind of wished I had spent more time on it but I didn't take my mask off much so it didn't really matter.

I watched some videos online from the movie and video games to get the movement and walking down which I really think added to the authenticity of the costume. I also used a black small draw-string backpack so I didn't have anything that distracted from my costume much, but still could carry my camera and such around. I plan to where it at Con again next year. Maybe I'll see you there!

Orb-ees become Beard-ees

I was brainstorming ways to embellish my new orb-headed creatures. I considered costumes and silly hats. Then it hit me, BEARDS! I am a beard lover, personally. I was also particularly excited because I have not seen bearded dolls in the past (unless you count the occasional pirate) and I am hoping that I came up with a somewhat unique idea. It is so hard to do so anymore. I have also decided to drop the Orb-ees name because I discovered, by googling, that there is a craft toy called Orbeez already in existence and again, I'd hate to be unoriginal if I can help it. I plan to make my beard-ees in all colors and potentially felt some in the future once I learn how.

Convergence-ness

Convergence is a four day sci-fi/fantasy convention at the Double Tree Bloomington, fourth of July weekend. Events include forums, music, fashion shows, diy projects, games, movies, meet and greets, food, all night theme room parties, and tons of people watching. My first year I dressed as my own version of the mad hatter, Winifred Sanderson from Hocus Pocus, and I wore my renaissance costume.

Last year I dressed as Jessica Rabbit, a steam punk woman, and a Silent Hill Bubble Head Nurse (by far, my favorite costume to date). I made the entire mask from scratch, my first latex mask creation, and it turned out far better than I could have hoped for! I made the hat myself, purchased the dress online and gored it up, and found gold shoes at the thrift store that I painted white and splattered with gore. I use acrylic paint instead of fake blood because it doesn't wash away in the laundry. I will probably create a post this specific of how I did it and more pictures soon.

One new craft I have learned in the past year is crocheting. I had been making cowls, or wrap around scarves, exclusively until this month when I branched out and started to learn Amigurumi (the Japanese art of crocheting or knitting little creatures and things). I have only made a doughnut, a white totoro, and a handful of little orb-head people. Not sure yet how I am going to embellish the orb-ees yet. I am just sort of perfecting my forms at this point. I may make them a bit less naked. Maybe silly hats are in order. You know, because the sign says, "silly hats only".

I had an epiphany today. I realized that the facebook, while being a nice way to keep in contact with friends, is not the most productive use of my interweb time. I realized coming back to my blogger and tumblr would be fun and they are better sources for networking and sharing my artsy adventures with other potentially like-minded individuals. In coming back, I realized I have been away for quite a while so I plan to add some belated entries. I have made a bunch of spiffy things since I last did the blog thing, if I do say so myself, so I will add them in amongst my new creations. I have learned crocheting too so I am excited to share my new skillz.

A Drawing a Day

Pretty Flags and Wearable Art

I liked the idea of hand-painting flags, kinda like a soft, artsy version of the flags you see at used car dealerships or muted colored flag banners similar to Tibetan pray flags.

I started by stretching canvas and painting then I cut the painting into flags.

I also found inspiration from this remnant fabric flag I found on Apartment Therapy.

A fairly productive spring break. I painted the powder room. Gawd, it feels good to have one less white wall! The porcelain sink, toilet an fixtures actually look nice now. And my nose/mouth art looks great on the green walls.

I made wings for myself (of course) and up boyfriends cousins. I made them last fall but didn't have a blog to display my work on and now I do!

The fairy magazine below has an example of the next style of wings I want to make. I love all the wing sections and the deep blue color.

Storage Under the Stairs

So, we have a million dvd's, vhs's, video games, and board games and I want then to be away but accessible. My plan, create storage in the crawl space under the stairs in the basement! I figure the unfinished part of the basement and all the closets for normal storage (the kind you don't really want people to see.) So I don't really need the under the stair space for that kind of storage so I can make it look nice and organized; a place people do see to pick out dvds or games to play. I have been having trouble finding an example of what I am looking for but I found this one grainy picture of a pantry that is pretty much what I want to do. The back wall of the space is slanted for the steps so we can do staggered shelves like the ones in the picture. I just think I am going to need to put in some kind of light so you can see the selection under there. And of coarse, I will paint it fun funky colors. Oooo, maybe I can get some funky wall or shelf paper! I'm having too much fun.

These are cool too, but more work than I plan to do and they wouldn't really fit the space I need filled!

Decisions, decisions... Did I Spell That Right?

I am torn between two types of green for the bedroom, a grassier, sagier green like the walls of Penelope's room of a bluer green like the walls in the picture below. I really love the room below as a whole, the bits of red and deep blue are awesome and I love the drapes! If I go with the bluer green I am going to have to steal a bunch of ideas from that picture! I even love the lobsters.

The Best Easy Lasagna Ever

This is a pretty spiffy lasagna recipe that I learned from Mysea my old roomie in college.

I have changed it a bit and you can too. It isn't to fancy, I don't make my own sauce and I use no boil noodles but I love it and you have leftovers for a couple days( it reheats easily and still tastes great!)

You will need:

No Boil Lasagna Noodles

One egg

One Container of Ricotta Cheese (I use the low fat stuff.)

Big Bag (4 cups) of Mozzarella Cheese

Smaller Bag of Parmasian (! and 1/2 cups)

Italian Sausage flavored Ground meat (I use turkey and I swear people can't tell the different. Get Jenny O, it tastes the best. Sweet or Spicy.)

Two Jars of Sauce (I like Prego)

Spinach (fresh or frozen, you can just use Spinach by itself if you are anti-meat.)

1. Pre-heat the oven. Look at the box to find out what temperature it suggests for the oven. I think different brands of pasta suggest different temps.

2. Fry up the meat. Be sure to cook it thoroughly.

If it is in sausage casing just cut open the casing and throw that away.

Then scoop it onto a paper towel-covered plate to let it cool and to drain the extra grease from it.

3. Get a big lasagna pan/ casorolle dish (I can't spell to save my life.)

4. Pour enough sauce into the bottom to give it a good saucy layer. I pour some into the middle and then tip the pan around so it spreads out.

5. In a large bowl mix all of the Ricotta, half of the parmasian, and the egg.

6. Spread the mixture on the first three pieces of lasagna and place them in the pan on the sauce layer, they shouldn't be touching and see the picture above showing you how to place them.

7. Sprinkle some sausage and spinach on top of the ricotta. (You will have to judge how much to put in each layer so you don't run out for all the layers.)

8. Sprinkle some more sauce on each noodle. (You should use at least a jar and a half total to be sure you have a good sause to cheese and pasta ratio and to be sure that the noodles have moisture to soak up.)

9. Add some mozzarella cheese on top. (I end up using all most all of the cheeseby the time I am done. I love cheese.)

10. Repeat. The number of noodles in the box should tell you how many layers to make. They usually give you one extra noodle.

11. Save three noodles for the top. Do not put the ricotta mixture on top of these. Just pour on the rest of the sauce and sprinkle with cheese. (I usually put on some of the left over parmasian and save some to sprinkle on when we take it out of the oven to eat. )

12. Cover with tin foil. ( I usually put a few tooth picks sticking out of the top middle of the lasagna so the foil doesn't stick to the cheese. Just don't forget they are in there!! That could hurt!)

13. Cook the recommended time on the box. Usually it is 30 min with the tin foil on and 10-15 with it off.

14. Take out of the oven. Check with a tooth pick through a noodle-y part to make sure the noodles seem done.

15. Let cool for 5 min. Then, EAT IT!

*For leftovers, I usually use the re-heat button on the microwave for 3-5 min depending on how big the piece is.

We are counting down the days to the move. 31 days and counting! Good thing is there is plenty to do between now and then. Eri's grad party is tomorrow. School wraps up on June 5th. Red Hot Art Fest is the 6th and 7th. I just need to set something up for the next two weekends to keep me busy and distracted to make the time go quicker!

I have been busy making lots of magnets and other stuff for Red Hot. Here is some of my new goodies. The big clay bead necklaces are not for sale. I'm stingy and I want to keep them. Hopefully I can make more some day to sell.

Oooo, I need a big piece of sheet metal to display my magnets. I think that would work better than the "tower". If anyone has something that you think might work that I can have or borrow, let me know! If not, I'll have a good excuse to visit Ax Man!

The quest for jars.

So I want to put all of my artsy crafty crap in clear jars, color coded so I can see what is in each and find things easily. You probably saw my inspiration, I posted pictures of that sweet little craft room design I found on apartment therapy with the jars. I am having trouble deciding how to do it. I really like the 10 jars of each type style uniformity of the ones in the photo. I think it will be way cheaper and look more funky and fun if I just save a bunch of random sized /shaped jars from the fridge and maybe paint all of the lids black. Ultimately, the latter will probably win due to thrifty-ness. Wish I could find more pictures of a similar idea. If you have any jars, don't throw them out!!! Save them for me, please!

I love my Chinese Garden Stools

I loved the garden stools in Penelope's room but I couldn't find any under $80 (before shipping). That was until my friend's mom brought us to Home Goods. I love this store! They had a ton bunch of them and I couldn't stop with one. I had to go get the blue one too. And it was chipped so they gave me a discount. So it is ok. ;)

Shinky Dinks

I have been making shrinky dinks like mad. I plan to sell them at red hot arts fest in Minneapolis this summer. I need to try to make rings. I also need to test better ways of sealing the side I drew on. Nail polish seems to make the colors bleed. The examples are just some fun ones I found on the interweb (Crooked House). I want mine to be a sudo-surprize for the art festival.

I am also dabbling in feathery hair thing making. The first one turned out pretty nicely. I need to find a place that sells lots of fun feathers for cheap!

My Pretty Workshop

I am hoping to have a dirty workshop in part of the unfinished basement. And I will have an office or pretty workshop as it will be called in the "den" upstairs (an office sounds too serious). It could also be called my making things center. I'm always making things. Little charms, little strange stuffed things (my oddistuffies, if you will), feathery hair things, Halloween costumes. I found some awesome pictures on Apartment Therapy of some one's sewing room. I not a huge fan of the colors, but the organization and decorating ideas are so fun. I love the little jars (I have so many buttons and beads and doo-dads and can never find them), and the spool rack on the wall and the shelves. Ikea, here I come! And I think the color coding is so sweet, I have plans for color coding my books and cds too.

Paint Color Inspiration #2

Penelope, and Amelie are such beautiful films. Great happy girly stories and wonderful colors, cinematography, and sets. The master bedroom is next on the list to paint. I have a big deep red comforter and I was so excited to see the mix of green with deep reds in the both movies (I was worried I would have to do a mainly red room and, for one reason or another that didn't really seem like me). I also love the antique-y, whimsical decor from both movies. A have already found some sweet Chinese garden stools and I am trying my darnest to start a bell jar collection. (They are a 'B' to find!) I'm thinking a hazy green for the bedroom walls, and potentially a muted red paint or Amelie-ish wall paper for the bathroom.

Paint Color Inspiration #1

I love movies with elaborate sets and fun interiors. I did want to go to school for Industrial Design Technology! Why does art school have to be so freakin' expensive??!
So far one of the major inspirations for the paint colors of the new house is from Bjork's "Venus as a Boy" video (the blue kitchen has been destined to happen for years now). I love the blue kitchen. I love the idea of a deep blue space evr since I saw William Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet with Leo D and Claire D. When the movie came out found a postcard of the scene with Juliet out on some balcony during the party where they meet and one of the colors in the background is this amazing deep blue. It is weird how colors just stick with me, have a lasting effect. This is why I love the internet, I can find any picture I remember, any movie or song I ever missed. Nostagia is glorious.

Twin Home Here We Come!

We start moving into the new twinhome in June and I am ridiculously excited about painting, organizing and decorating the space. In the process of searching for design idea pictures I stubbled across numerous sites with fun painting ideas, interior design tips and other creativity. Apparently I have never really known what blogs looked like and it took me awhile to realized that that is exactly the type of sites I kept coming across. Blogs!
